The Former Good Samaritan Convent - Guys Road, Korumburra

            Built on the cusp of the Great War in 1914, the Good Samaritan Convent on Korumburra's Guys Road is part of the Catholic prescinct associated with St Joseph's Church and its associated Parsonage.

Built in the prevailing architectural Arts and Crafts style of the time, the convent is a lovely example of a small country town religious building built for this purpose.

Set well back from the road the Good Samaritan Convent is quiet and unassuming, which reflected the original inhabitants of this building.  Built of red brick with a roughcast wall treatment, the only real detail on the building is in the bay where a cross fills a cornice along with some ornamental latticework and the building name and date.  The convent still has its original corrugated iron roof, which shows dark patches of dried moss and lichen which grow on it duing the damp and cold winter months.

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan is a Roman Catholic congregation of religious women commenced by Archbishop John Bede Polding, Australia’s first Catholic bishop, in Sydney in 1857. The congregation was the first religious congregation to be founded in Australia. The sisters form an apostolic institute that follows the Rule of St Benedict.  They take their name from the well-known gospel parable of the Good Samaritan.

Whilst there are still around two hundred Good Samaritan Sisters living and ministering throughout Australia, they are no longer at the Korumburra convent built for them, and the building has found a new use as a community centre; something I think the Sisters would approve of.

 Korumburra is a medium-sized dairy and farming town in country Victoria, located on the South Gippsland Highway, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.  Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town has a population of a little over 4,000 people.  Korumburra has built itself on coal mining (after the discovery of a coal seam in 1870), local forestry and dairy farming.  Whilst the coal seam has been used up, farming in the area still thrives and a great deal of dairy produce is created from the area.  The post office in the area opened on the 1st of September in 1884, and moved to the township on the railway survey line on the 1st of November 1889, the existing office being renamed Glentress.  The steam railway connecting it with Melbourne arrived in 1891.  Whilst the train line has long since operating commercially, it has found a new life as the popular tourist railway the South Gippsland Railway which operates a heritage railway service between the major country centre of Leongatha and the small market town of Nyora.
