1958 Lotus-Climax 12 - a photo on Flickriver

            Pictured is a 1958 Lotus-Climax 12 Grand Prix Car.

This is the first Formula 1 model produced by the historic Lotus marque. Initially conceived as a Formula 2 entry, an uprated Coventry-Climax engine saw the 12 entered as a Formula 1 car.

The car's debut World Championship race came at Monaco in 1958, the cars being entrusted to Cliff Allison and double World Champion Graham Hill. Against the might of Vanwall and Ferrari, the 12 could never compete, although Cliff Allison did finish fourth at the Belgian Grand Prix. That solitary points scoring position would place Allison equal 18th in the championship, Lotus finishing sixth in the inaugral Constructors Championship.

The 12 would be replaced mid-season by the Lotus 16, although that car failed to score any points.
