            After the castle was abandoned in the early 1600's it did see one more conflict. In 1643 during the Civil War, the Castle was seized by Parliamentarian Forces under Sir William Brereton, a local landowner. The castle was recaptured that year by Irish Royal forces that landed at Chester (before the Dee Estuary silted up) by just eight soldiers that may have been let in. The castle commander was captured and marched his forces out and the Royalists held the castle.
