Perennial.

Native to the Hawaiian Islands and elsewhere (old world tropics and subtropics, as far north as southeastern Tibet; northeastern Australia, and many islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans).  In Hawai`i it has been collected on Kaua`i, the Wai`anae Mountains on O`ahu (leeward side of the mountain range, on ridges and cliffs in or adjoining the valleys of Lualualei, Wai`anae Kai, and Mākaha), East Moloka`i, West Maui (leeward side, southwestern slope of Līhau), and East Maui (southwestern side of Haleakalā in Kanaio and at Pu`unaio).

In much of C. cyperinus’ range outside of Hawai`i, the species is not uncommon and it is regarded as a weedy plant.  In Hawai`i, however, it appears to be a rare, non-weedy plant that is usually found in native dominated vegetation.  Elsewhere in its range, the species often occurs in wet habitats, whereas in Hawai`i it occurs only in dry to dry-mesic habitats.
