Lobelia koolauensis (Hosaka and Fosberg) Lammers

Federally listed as endangered.

Hawaiian names: pu`e, hāhā, `ōhā, `ōhā wai
Family: Campanulaceae (the bellflower family)
Habit: A shrub, single stemmed or occasionally branched at the base. Usually monocarpic (flowers once, then dies) if single stemmed.
Habitat: wet shrubland, often on steep slopes.

Native; endemic. Lobelia koolauensis is endemic to the northern and central Ko`olau Mountains, O`ahu.

Lobelia koolauensis appears to be adapted to growing in places in the Ko`olau Mountains where the trade winds are especially strong due to the local topography. In contrast to the related L. gaudichaudii, which occurs mostly on the windward side of the Ko`olau summit ridge, all of the well documented populations of L. koolauensis are located at sites to the lee of the summit ridge where the trade winds are stronger than they are along the windward face of the Ko`olau summit ridge. The vegetation in these areas is similar to the vegetation of montane bogs dominated by low-growing Metrosideros on Kaua`i, East Moloka`i, West and East Maui, and the island of Hawai`i.
