The Orphan that Croston took to its heart

            This little orphan's Grave is well known to long established villagers in Croston, Lancashire but , for those who don't know about it , it is a touching story.

In the late 19th century, Mary Elizabeth Hudson was an orphan who lived at Croston Industrial Home for Girls.

She died in 1890 of TB, aged 13 years, and was buried in a pauper's grave in the top right hand corner of the cemetery, some distance from other graves .

Despite this the little orphan was not forgotten.

Following her death, local children adopted her grave, and placed flowers in her memory.

Over a hundred years have passed since her death, and new graves are now in line with her once solitary resting place.
 Records from St Michael's and All Angels' show that she was buried on the 2nd June 1890.

 In 1976 a school teacher came to Croston and lived opposite the cemetery, and said that a little girl in a red shawl was a regular visitor to her garden, the red shawl she was wearing was the same as the uniform of the little girl who died in 1890. Another lady said that she was in her kitchen and felt a tug on her skirt, she thought it was her child, but when she looked it was a little girl in a red shawl. 

Local people still tend to her grave , as you can see .
