Stirling Castle (14) - a photo on Flickriver

            It's not exactly Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel, but Stirling Castle has its own small chapel (it has had several in succession over the years).  Only its slate roof is visible from this angle, above the trees in the small garden above the nether bailey.  King James VI had the chapel built, in less than 7 months, for the baptism of his first son , Prince Henry.  It is entered through a triumphal arch shaped doorway, of Classical Renaissance design.  According to a contemporary writer, its ceiling was decorated in gold and the walls were embellished with painted scenes and sculptures appropriate to the baptism. 

When the royal court moved to London in 1603, the chapel fell out of use, but was redecorated in preparation for Charles I's coronation in 1633, of which some painted murals of the coronation regalia have survived.  Later, the building was put over to military use.  A surviving plan of the building shows that by 1870, the western part was a store, and the rest was divided into a chapel, a classroom and an armoury.  It was fully restored in the 1930s, when the painted murals were rediscovered.
