Can a chapel be more primitive? - a photo on Flickriver

            The old Primitive Methodist chapel of 1836, and adjoining school added in 1878, on Newcastle Lane close to its junction with Saint Marks Place in Penkhull (effectively a village within a city), Stoke-on-Trent. The chapel remained in use until 1996 and is now occupied by the Penkhull Christian Fellowship.
The frontage of the chapel (on the right) has been altered, its windows being elongated, originally having five and a central entrance from what can be made of old pictures.
Primitive Methodism started in the Potteries following a drive to increase congregations by holding outdoor meetings in and around an area called Mow Cop. Two of the main contributors to these meetings, Hugh Bourne and William Clowes were subsequently expelled from the Methodist New Connexion in 1808 and 1810 respectively. The first chapel was opened in Tunstall and gradually spread throughout the area.
The Primitive Methodists were known as Clowsites, relating to William Clowes.
