Named after a shed? - a photo on Flickriver

            The George and Dragon public house on the junction of Heathcote Road and The Strand, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.
Known locally as "The Owd Hut" or "Th'owd Hut" (the old hut in the Potteries dialect), it reputedly got its nickname from the practice of the town's prostitutes taking their customers to an old shed in the backyard of the pub to turn their trick.
It dates back to the late nineteenth century, showing up on the 1871 census, with the original address being given as Stafford Street. It has recently been refurbished.
The pub sits on a triangle of land, just off Stafford Street that includes Gold Street, this area gained the name of "Longton's Bermuda Triangle", being filled with many pubs. within the triangle (maybe 150 metres per side), were this pub, The Duke of Clarendon, The Bridge Inn, The George Inn, The Shamrock, The Cricketers Arms and The Old Black Lion. The name derived from the practice of men entering the triangle and not being seen for days without trace. The local police believed that they could find any of the towns miscreants at any time of the day or night within the vicinity.
If you look closely you can see a little carved George and Dragon on the near corner of the building beside the first floor windows.
It has been both a Joule's and Bass pub during its lifetime.
Longton town centre is listed as a conservation area at risk by English Heritage.
