A twofer.

            These two buildings are no longer there on Uttoxeter Road (formerly High Street) in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, a pair of old pubs never to be seen again following demolition.
The nearer of the two is probably the newer of the pubs and was The Elephant and Castle, which sat on the corner of Barker Street (formerly Sale Street). There doesn't appear to be any record of the pub before appearing on the 1856 ordnance survey map. I haven't found any details about its closure but prior to demolition it was occupied by Electro Tech Controls Ltd and at some time someone has reconstructed the frontage somewhat, although the probable position of the old entrance can be seen on the corner.
The other pub, The Royal Oak (still complete with signage when photographed) is probably a somewhat older building. There appear to be records of this pub dating back to 1807, with some maps showing a brewing house in the rear yard. It shows up in Pigot's Trade Directory in 1828, listed as being in Lane End. The single storey building appears to have been a later addition to the pub.
The Royal Oak was bought by James Glover who was owner of Longton Brewery some time in the late nineteenth century and eventually sold it to Joule's Brewery in 1903 who were eventually taken over by Bass.
Another bit of Longton's history gone and probably forgotten by many.
