Defaced.

            Defaced by an ugly modern extension to the front and lacking its original steeple, which sat on the right hand tower, this old chapel is now used as a nursery under the name Kids & Co.
Otiginally built in 1873 to a design by Liverpool architect Richard Owens and constructed by Hanley builder E Hammersley, this was a Welsh Presbyterian, sometimes known as Calvinistic Methodist, chapel, intended to cater for a Welsh congregation that had to meet in a temperance hall for lack of a church or chapel.
This chapel, due to declining numbers merged with the Congregationalist Church in 1928. it continued in use for some years but had its registration as a place of worship cancelled in 1952. It then appears to have been reregisterd in the same year and was used by the Assembly of God church, although I'm not sure until when.
It was originally built with a low brick wall with coping and entrance flanked by two brick pillars, similarly capped in stone, on the line of the neighbouring houses. The chapel entrance sat under the tower.
The steeple was still in place in a picture that I have seen dated 1963, and I seem to remember it as a child.
The once proud looking St. John Street, which overlooks Hanley and Northwood, is now in a rather sad state of repair.
