Breakin' the Rulz

            In 2022, the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners held their annual meeting in Chicago.  A key highlight this year was to traverse some lesser traveled routes all throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend.  Routes traveled took them Fox Lake, Joliet (both in Illinois), and along the South Shore line into Michigan City in Indiana. On the final day of excursions, the AAPRCO Special would embark up the Union Pacific Belvidere Sub to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL via Belvidere.  

A day of activities and photo ops behind them, Metra 90 and 104, Metra's Chicago & Northwestern and City of Chicago heritage units, are once again leading the AAPRCO Special past the historic depot in Wayne, IL.  It was about 430pm, and the depot area had become quite crowded.  I opted for a less-crowded shot, so I chose to set up on the side of the tracks where no one else was.  This, of course, meant I would be shooting back toward the sun and getting the "dark side" of the train.  This "breaks the rulz" of modern railroad photography.  But what matters more, getting a one-of-a-kind shot from an angle no one else has?  Or trying to please the Photo Nazis that run RailPricks.Net?  Most people will never notice my sun is a little blown out and the depot is a little noisy.  All they'll see is the lone woman with her dog waiving to the engineer as the train passes. (All of which belies the fact there were nearly 30 people here and a photo line of 10-12 foamers lined up shoulder to shoulder all getting practically identical shots).
