E for Experimental

            The APT-E, (Advanced Passenger Train Experimental) was an ambitious experment, built by the British Rail Research Division at Derby between 1972 and 1976. Powered by Gas Turbines, and using tilting technology it was the predecessor of the class 370 APT-P electric units.

Whilst the APT never made it beyond the prototype sets the tilt technology did see further use in the Class 390 'Pendolino' units.
