Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague

            The largest Jewish cemetery in Europe, used for burials from the early 1400's until 1787, when Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand II banned all burials within the city of Prague to protect public hygiene.  Because Prague's Jewish community was only occasionally permitted to expand the cemetery and because of religious proscriptions on disturbing graves, newer burials were accomodated by adding layers of soil on top of older burials.  In places, there are up to 12 layers of graves and soil.  Some older gravestones were lifted up, so the jumbled set of stones visible today includes markers from 3 centuries of burials.  The markers include both flat, vertical slabs and house- or tent-shaped Tumbas in baroque style. Today the cemetery is administered by the Jewish Museum, which also maintains several old synagogues.
