Half-Timber 16th century

            Humans have inhabited the site of modern Einbeck, Germany (Lower Saxony)  since the Paleolithic.  Einbeck became a market town in the 12th century and and eventually gained fame as a center for beer-making; Today it is home to the famous EInbecker Brewery.  In 1540, as the Lutheran Reformation spread across northern Germany, an arsonist destroyed virtually every structure within the old medieval walls, possibly in revenge for the city's turn away from the Roman church.  Within a few years, the prosperous community, largely committed to Protestantism, was able to rebuild itself in the half-timber style, but the the creation of long rows of wooden town-houses perpetuated the risk of disastrous, rapidly spreading fires, to this day still a hazard in this historic precinct.  Some of the larger, arching doorways were entry portals for carts bearing barley and hops.  (May 18, 2018)
