Everyone in Cameroon knows Baham's Fovu.
Fovu de Baham is like the Eagle of Dschang, Thunder of Yaoundé or Mount Cameroon of Buea, it is the name of the local football team.
But more than that, Fovu, it is one of the most sacred places in the West. People make pilgrimages to come to Fovu to be blessed, to make offerings, or to see a Kemsi.

And my friend says: "You know Olivier, my grandfather is Fovu's guardian. He was in charge of Fovu before the first king of the Baham arrived. " (grandfather is to be taken in the broad sense, in the sense of grandfather).

Fovu is a huge site where patatoidal granitic stones rest. For those who know, it is very similar to Huel Goat, in Brittany, a place inhabited by fairies. The site is aesthetically very beautiful, and the presence at my side of a successor member opens the doors for me.

When we arrive in "the cathedral", I understand why this place has become sacred. A huge stone, 40m long, 20m wide, 15m high, seems to be laid in the void. We do not see the "pillars" that hold it in suspension, but we can walk under this stone, which covers an area of 100-150m2. No matter how hard we look, balance seems impossible. According to tradition, it was the gods who deposited this stone from heaven.

The characteristics of Fovu
A vast field of granitic rocks stretching over 15 hectares, Fovu is located a few kilometres from the Royal Palace of Baham. In this small valley bordered by eucalyptus, avocado, mango and banana trees, huge patatoid masses of granite rise 3 to 15 metres high. Rounded, imposing, their greyish colour contrasts with the red earth and the lush vegetation of the surrounding area.
The rock forest is a real small labyrinth that offers multiple shelters. In places, these rocks are placed on other underlying rocks, forming natural dolmens suitable for different rites. The largest rock, whose dimensions exceed 35 metres long and 15 metres high, thus seems to be in suspension and covers an area that can accommodate several dozen people. This "cave" is called the cathedral.
Every year Fovu attracts thousands of pilgrims, who sometimes come from abroad to make offerings, libations, ceremonies, in order to obtain the favors of the divinity. This place is occupied daily by the Kemsi (seers) of Baham, as well as by charlatans, numerous sects and other evangelical churches.
The legend of Fovu, told by a prominent Baham
"One day - it was market day - a German[Hans Glauning] arrived in Baham. This was the first time that the Baham Man had contact with the White Man[in 1905]. We didn't know who it was. As people came to see him, we realized that he was getting closer to the chiefdom. So we feared that he would attack the leadership.
So we called the Foneka, the chief's warriors. The warriors came and wanted to demonstrate their strength, with jumps, reproductions of fights to make the white man flee. So the greatest warrior starts jumping in front of the German, and every time he touches the ground, he shows him how to lift his arrow[a spear] to pierce it. When he finishes, the white man who didn't flinch tries to flatter him without success with gifts, but it doesn't work.
Then, the white man, by provocation, pulls his loincloth from him and it falls to the ground. As he bends down to pick it up, the white man grabs it up, ties it up, and puts it in the car. But while he is tying him up, the village chief orders him to go and cut off the bridges. The white man finishes tying him up and leaves, but when he realizes that the bridges are cut, he understands that it is a declaration of war. So he comes back to the village and shoots everyone. When he finished killing everyone he saw, he took his cameras to see[twins]. He saw the people who were in Fovu, he heard the noise of the people, but when he fired, the bullets were stopped by Fovu. He understood and left through Bandjoun. He then sent his message back to Berlin saying that the Baham people had rebelled.
It is one of the only peoples to have rebelled.... Even today, we can't show Fovu everything, because there are still lots of secrets, secret rooms to hide in case of war".
