Resolution - a photo on Flickriver

Resolution

            There's a bit of a double meaning in the title of this image.  First is the incredible and complex nature of today's cameras.  I am an engineer by training and I am just amazed at the detail, the colors, and the dynamic range that can be captured by these marvels of technology.  In addition, the ability of post processing apps that can take multiple images and seamlessly stitch them together into a single panorama boggles my mind.  This is a pano that comprised of six vertical images and was stitched together in Lightroom.  I really enjoy zooming in to see all the detail that is created with such high resolution.

The second meaning pertains to one of my New Year's resolutions as I intend to shoot more landscapes than I did in 2017.  While I so enjoy capturing all the various critters that we see in our travels, I also love to capture the grand vistas and other places that we are so privileged to visit.

The image above is at Valley of Fire State Park, north of our adopted second home of Las Vegas.  My wife and I love to visit the park as it is full of awesome rock formations and is home to a surprising variety of desert wildlife.  This location is near the eastern entrance to the park.  I had climbed high on a ridge above a noted landmark and waited for the sun to set.  It was fun to watch other cars stop as I waited, their occupants scrambling up the path to see what it was I was shooting.  None of them waited around long enough to see the setting sun and the subsequent gorgeous sunset sky.  This pano was taken as the light crept up the rock face and before the light and show began.
