High Island Roost

            A double-crested cormorant comes into the Smith Oaks Sanctuary to look for an evening roosting spot.  It was remarkable to see and hear quite literally hundreds if not thousands of birds coming in to land on one of the small islands that dotted the freshwater ponds.  In addition to the cormorants (both double-crested and neotropical), there were white and white-faced ibis, snowy egrets, great egrets, tri-colored herons and others I’m sure I missed.  

Smith Oaks is located in the High Island area of the Bolivar Peninsula along the Texas Gulf coast.  It is managed by the Houston Chapter of the Audubon Society.
