Grey water recycling, Bari-Tal Eltut, Salamieh district

            Due to increasingly hot, dry and lengthy summers, access to water is an every growing challenge in the Salamieh district. in order to make the most of the water that is available, AKAH are supporting a number of households in the Salamieh district to install grey water recycling infrastructure. This allows tese households to first filter grey water from their household and then use it to irrigate crops.

Here, Mohammed Zidane, a horse breeder and farmer, demonstrates how it works. According to Mohammed, 30 years ago there were apple and cherry trees everywhere, now he says farmers can only grow wheat and olives as these require far less water. He says the area used to be green and with with plenty of water - the nomads brought their herds here to drink - but now it is dry. "I’m very worried about the next 5-10 years. People just don’t have enough water." He recently stayed with family in the nearby village and they could barely get 1 litre of water from their taps.
