Douglas DC-3 ‘NC16005’ “Flagship Orange County”

c/n 19394
Built in 1944 as a C-47A-75-DL with the US military serial 42-100931. Delivered to Europe in March 1944 and operated by the 440th Troop Carrier Group of the Ninth Air Force, based at Exeter. Took part in Operation Albany, delivering troops of the 101st Airborne Division to Normandy on the night of the 5th/6th June 1944 in support the amphibious assault on Utah beach the following morning.
Returned to the USA in September 1944 and sold off in November 1945, becoming N56U on the US civil register. Moved to Canada as CF-JUV in May 1957, later changing to C-FJUV. Between 1995 and 2003 she flew in Alaska as N1944M with Era Classic Aviation, but has now been restored to represent a DC-3A(DST) of American Airlines.

Note:- The original NC16005 was built in 1936 as a DCT-144 with the c/n 1499 and was the sixth DC-3 produced. It became a C-49E with the US military serial 42-56092 during WW2 and was last civil registered as N133D. She still exists and is the oldest surviving DC-3 of any model. As of May 2020 she was stored under cover at Shell Creek Airport in Punta Gorda, Florida.
