Shadows on a Queenbeyan wall

            The old mate I was staying with actually lives in Queenbeyan, just on the New South Wales side of the border, but only 20 minutes drive to the centre of Canberra. We shift now to Quuenbeyan and some of the streets close into the town centre.

When Canberra was being built, Queenbeyan was where the operation was based from. For those of you from the rest of the world. Canberra was a planned settlement. When Australia federated at the end of the 19th Century, the various states were unable to agree as to whether the capital should be Sydney or Melbourne. Sydney was the older of the two and more established, but just at that moment Melbourne was only recently out of an astounding gold rush, one that had lasted many decades, and one that had for that moment, made Melbourne the more populous and wealthy of the two. It was only to last a wee while, but in the meantime, Melbourne was the capital until Canberra was finished sometime in the late 20s.
