"why is a softbox called a softbox?"

Inspired title from wondering why is a softbox called a softbox! The purpose of a softbox is to give a soft light that wraps around the subject they say, so I decided to sit on me chair about 6 inches from the rim of the softbox and see what happens!

Like most photographers I am very un-comfortable in front of the lens, more at home behind the lens and sometimes a tad nervous behind it too! But I'd had my Phomax 60cm x 60cm softbox for a few weeks without testing out the impact of using it! So I decided to hook it onto a lightstand with it's bracket and then try and do some selfies! Not easy to do when you are holding the camera at arms length and trying to review images that everything seems back to front!

Used my favourite lens for this set-up the Nikon AF 50mm f1.4 prime, I just love this little lens - two reasons i) It is so creative you can use it to generate such awesome DOF and ii) it's cheap, come on for £150 you cannot go wrong! I love a photographic bargain - there are not many out there but the Nikon 50mm AF range has some beauties - I've also owned the AF 50mm f1.8 in my time (that's around £100) and is lush too but the f1.4 len's is so versatile I love it!

Anyhow I made two shot's out of this one - as I did a crop in Lightroom to just pull out one of my eyes, and this is another reason why I love the Nikon D600! In fact I love this camera so much I bought another one last week! Now the owner of 2 of these awesome cameras! Forget all the bad press and just try one, the 24 MP's allow you to capture so much detail and then crop in - if you need! Plus it's fast too - 5.5 FPS gives me everything I need!

Anyhow I hope you don't mind looking at my ugly mug too much just enjoyed the experiment!
