Nova Scotia Postal History - March 1906 - UPPER KINGSBURY (Kingsburg) (Lunenburg County), N.S. (split ring / broken circle cancel / postmark) to Dartmouth (Halifax County), N.S.

UPPER KINGSBURG (Lunenburg County), N.S. - For many decades Kingsburg was mixed a fishing and farming community. By the mid twentieth century, with the widespread decline of small-scale Atlantic fishery, most fishing culture has disappeared. With little opportunity, the village's Foreign Protestant population collapsed and many of the buildings were abandoned and destroyed, leaving the village with only a few dozen full-time inhabitants. Today it is a quaint little summer hamlet with about 25 houses occupied full-time.

The hammer was made in error - should have been named UPPER KINGSBURG - it was finally corrected, when a new split ring hammer, (UPPER KINGSBURG) was proofed on - 26 July 1915. The post office at UPPER KINGSBURG was opened - 1 October 1892 and closed - 15 July 1960.

Message on postcard reads: Xmas holidays I noticed among your photo's one of Blue Rock's (I think) showing collages, a lot of fish stores, and drying nets. It is just what I am in need of. Have you another showing closer view of hanging net? Intent going to town next Saturday. PLEASE sell me the one or the two, and direct them to Min (his sister Minnie), and I shall pay her what you charge. I have a funny address, but I have not time to write to Min for it. Interesting discovery by Mary Bowers - Water-rolled Weed Balls: This was A.H. MacKay’s suggested name for ‘sea-balls’, compact balls of seaweeds and other materials found on a beach near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. MacKay wrote a paper about these balls for the Transactions of the Nova Scotia Institute of Science in 1906. These strange formations were first reported by a teacher, Mary Bowers, who wrote to MacKay about their occurrence on a beach at Upper Kingsburg, along the mouth of the LaHave River. She wrote: “I have seen up to 200 balls on a short strip of beach…” MacKay described them as 1 ½ to 5 inches in diameter, composed of rolled-up remains of brown algae. The balls also incorporated red seaweeds, sea sponges, and small sea shells. MacKay wrote: “…Their structure in the different forms examined suggest their formation from light ridges of algae left by the retreating tide on flat sandy shallows. Under the sun, the weeds curl and lock into masses which, when moved over the sand by alternate tides and winds, occasionally produce very round balls.” LINK - janetims.com/tag/manganese-concretions/

The American Civil War had captured the interest of many people in the province, and it appears that Rev. Bowers was drawn to return to his native country. Rev. Bowers resigned his pastorate in May 1863, and with his family, left for the United States. This departure was short lived, and he returned to the county at the request of several parishioners. In 1873 he resigned his congregation in Nova Scotia, accepted
a call to Concord, North Carolina and, with his eldest son Charles, who was to attend North Carolina college, he left

(April 3, 1917) - The death of Mrs. Louisa Bowers, eldest daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Cossman of Lunenburg, took place at her residence, Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon. She was the widow of the late Rev. W.W. Bowers, a former Lutheran pastor of Bridgewater. She leaves three sons, Captain Charles; Reverend Fred of Philadelphia; and Walter, manager of the Royal Bank of Canada, Shubenacadie. The late Miss Mary Bowers was the only daughter. Mrs. Bowers was 79 years of age, and had been in ill health for some time. She was a lady of rare intelligence and strength of character, and when able to get about she was noted for her charitable acts. She was born in Lunenburg, but spent the greater portion of her life in this town for she loved it and its associations and the many friends here. In the earlier days of her widowhood she kept a store on King Street and became widely known.

Educator Dies Here On Sunday - H. W. Hewitt Was Teacher In City From 1912 To Retirement - CHURCH WORKER WAS PIONEER IN MANUAL TRAINING WORK IN NOVA SCOTIA - For many years closely associated with education in Saskatoon and with Christ Church, H. W. Hewitt died in hospital on Sunday afternoon. His death followed complications after an operation. Mr. Hewitt came to Saskatoon in 1912 and taught manual training in Nutana and Bedford Road collegiates and commercial work in the Technical Collegiate and was employed by the Federal Government in the re-training for civil life of soldiers after the First Great War. He Is survived by his widow, Leah, residing at 317 Twenty-seventh Street, west; a son, Charles, North Battleford Collegiate teacher; two sisters, Minnie C. Hewitt of Lunenberg and Mrs. D. A. Mosher of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and a nephew Raeburne Hewitt of Oakland, California. Born at Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, August 19, 1878, he would have been 61 this month. After graduating from business college at Halifax, Mr. Hewitt was engaged in office work for three years. An equal period was spent In public school teaching. Just then, manual training was being introduced into Canada, and Mr Hewitt, sensing the possibilities in the movement, became one of its pioneers in Eastern Canada. Four years later he accepted a position, on a Halifax newspaper, which he held for five years. In 1912 he accepted the post of supervisor of manual training in Saskatoon. TO GOVERNMENT SERVICE When the Great War came, his services were requisitioned by the Federal Government, and he was one of six original vocational officers appointed by the Military Hospitals Commission, later the Department of Soldiers Civil Reestabllshment. In this capacity, and later as principal of the Provincial Vocational School for Disabled Soldiers, in Saskatoon, Mr. Hewitt served until 1920. With the completion of this work, Mr. Hewitt was placed In charge of manual training at Nutana Collegiate, and later opened the work at Bedford Road Collegiate. Here he Instituted the first Industrial training in the city. With the opening of the Technical School, and, until his retirement two years ago, he was a member of the commercial staff. Throughout his life, Mr. Hewitt took a most active Interest in all young people's work. He had many other varied interests, chief among which was his church. A life-long member of the Anglican Church and since his coming to Saskatoon, in Christ Church, he filled every office it was possible for a layman to hold. ACTIVE WORKER His energetic interests placed him In charge of numerous campaigns for the betterment of the church properties, especially those to clear the church of debt in 1928-27, and only last summer to place the church properties in first class condition after the depressing years. As Sunday School superintendent he was responsible for the Honor Roll which was erected in the church to the memory of those who served in 1914-18.
