The anniversary of Bangka Island massacre 16 Feb 1942, - the sole survivor, Vivian Bullwinkel (treating the British escapee).
The only survivor of the 'Banka/Bangka Island Massacre', Sister Vivian Bullwinkel (1915-2000), providing care to the mortally wounded British soldier Priv. Cecil Kingsley, who was captured and then bayoneted along with a number of British soldiers of the RAOC. The others were killed but Kingsley managed to drag himself into the jungle, where Bullwinkel was also hiding. He died a few days later.

The 'Banka Island Massacre' of 16th Feb. 1942, saw the Japanese drive their British soldier prisoners and Australian nurse prisoners on to a beach at Banka Island. The men were bayoneted on the beach, and the women forced into the surf and machine-gunned from behind. A bullet passed through Bullwinkel's torso but missed vital organs. She feigned death and crawled into the jungle at night.

Following the Fall of Singapore and Malaya in 1942, most of the allied troops and civilians left in the region were taken prisoner by the Japanese.
Jeffrey and 64 other nurses of the Australian Army Nursing Service, were evacuated just prior to the Occupation in the ship ‘Vyner Brooke’, which was bombed and sunk by Japanese bombers. 12 nurses were drowned, 21 were captured and summarily executed by the Japanese, and the remaining 32 taken into captivity.
This account written in secret on scraps of paper by Army Nurse Betty Jeffrey, (1908-2000), details the deprivations and horrors suffered by the Australian and British nurses ( also British and Dutch civilian prisoners and their children) at the hands of the Japanese in the POW and labour camps.
