Sacred ground of burial, but also an engineering monument

The 1905 obelisk went up 50 years after the first ship passed through the newly opened Soo Lock between Lake Superior (upstream) and Lake Huron (downstream). But most probably the human remains now under the small wooden spirit houses predate the engineering feat in the background on the St. Marys falls. Ever since 1990 the NAGPRA law set repatriation of museum collections in motion so that bones with known connection to living tribal communities would return for culturally-relevant laying to rest, once again.
