An aging man, drowning in lake dreams
Rises each morning and looks into
Sylvia Plath's mirror,
Hoping to find her there,
And afraid that he will.
He sees her back (as she turns away from him) just
Below the surface, unfaithfully reflecting his unrewarded reach.

She rises toward him every day. Yet
What kind of fish she is he does not yet know.

The candle and the moon are both liars.
