Sandboarding Te Paki Sand Dunes - Cape Reinga, Northland, New Zealand

Sandboarding is a popular activity here on the Te Paki Dunes.Considerable speeds are reached with some sandboarders overshooting the base of the dunes and skimming across the water in the shallow sandy river bed.

The TePaki Stream is the highway from Cape Reinga and onto Ninety Mile Beach . Cape Reinga is New Zealands near northern most point and home of the Cape Reinga lighthouse. 
Although only a shallow stream flowing across fairly fine firm sand Te Paki Stream should not be underestimated and vehicles must keep moving over most of its length or risk sinking into the sand.
There are a couple of places where the tourist buses can safely park on firm sand while thrill seekers try their hand at sandboarding on the large sand dunes running parallel to the stream.
Te Paki Stream,after about 1O minutes driving,eventually fans out onto Ninety Mile Beach and vehicles can then make their way down the beach emerging at Waipupakauri Ramp and a small town and thence back to the Highway.
