James Presley Ball

When i think of prominent, historical black photographers, James Van Der Zee and Gordon Parks were usually the first names that came to mind. But in the 19th century, before they were even born, James Presley Ball was making a name for himself as a daguerreotypist at the dawn of the photographic age. Throughout his career he would make portraits of many well known figures, including Frederick Douglass, P.T. Barnum, Charles Dickens, and Ulysses S. Grant. When i think of historical black photographers now, i will remember the man who was there at the beginning when the daguerreotype changed the world.
