8.7 Letter from Charles McLaren, Western Staffordshire Liberal Association, 26 May 1886

            Chamberlain’s actions provoked conflict within the Liberal Party, and most Liberals, including radicals and the National Liberal Federation, remained loyal to Gladstone. This letter represents the views of the Western Staffordshire Liberal Association in advising Chamberlain to vote in support of the second reading of the Home Rule Bill reading in May 1886. Chamberlain voted against the Bill, and its defeat prompted a general election in which Chamberlain campaigned as a Liberal Unionist. The election resulted in a Conservative and Liberal Unionist government, but Chamberlain did not immediately seek a position, aware that many Conservatives remained hostile towards him.
