This is one of about a dozen, hand-sized masks that are in various stages of completion since the end of the Fall 2011 semester. These studies are an attempt to explore the capturing of emotions in facial expressions using clay on a small scale. They are intentionally cartoon-like and exaggerated, much like a traditional mask might reflect.

From a fist-sized ball of clay through the forming, pinching, constructing, carving, texture-ing, and smoothing...it takes me about 2.5 to 3 hours. My thinking at this point is to assemble 5-7 of these together as part of a single construction...but I am still pondering the best use and display of these peeps.
