Standing in the Middle of the Road

            Not the most advisable place to stand, the middle of the A1 road - which runs 409 miles from the City of London to Edinburgh.

This section, Archway Road, was originally intended to be a tunnel. The Highgate Archway was to provide a route under Highate Hill, saving traffic the steep climb over the hill.

Unfortunately the tunnel suffered from collapses during construction. So instead the plans were changed and it was made into a cutting allowing the road to pass through.

Consequently, a bridge was also built, the second incarnation of which is the one seen in the distance, to reconnect both sides of the hill that had become separated.  Properly called Hornsey Lane Bridge, it is also known as the Archway as it forms an arch high above the road. It also had the nickname 'Suicide Bridge' due to its height making it a popular place to jump from.

It is this which gave the area of London between Holloway and Highgate the name Archway. It was also helped greatly by the former Highgate tube station adding this to its name when the Northern Line was extended and a new Highgate station built near where this photo was taken.
