La Fontana del Babuino, Roma

Una statua di sileno giacente adornava un'antica vasca quadrangolare di marmo africano che Alessandro Grandi utilizzò addossandola al prospetto principale del proprio edificio in via Paolina in cambio di alcune misure di acqua concessegli da papa Pio IV, secondo una prassi abbastanza diffusa a Roma nel sec. XVI. La bruttezza della statua (probabilmente copia di un'antica divinità pagana sabina, a metà fra un uomo e una capra, detta Sanco Fidio) era notevole e il popolo romano non perse tempo a ribattezzarla col nome di Babuino e con tale epiteto divenne talmente celebre da determinare il mutamento del toponimo della strada che da Via Paolina divenne appunto Via del Babuino.
La singolarità della fontana influenzò a tal punto i romani che cominciarono ad attribuire delle capacità soprannaturali e la annoverarono fra le quattro statue parlanti (insieme al Marfoglio capitolino, il più celebre Pasquino, a Madama Lucrezia, all'Abate Luigi) facenti parte del Congresso degli Arguti.
