The Old bridge, Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

            The Old Bridge in Mostar over the Neretva River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which, when it was built, was the largest arch structure in the world. The old bridge is a stone bridge built of tenelia stone. The arch is almost 29 meters long and 20 meters high, bent close to a lowered semicircle. It is characterized by a thin and elegant shape: the profile of the bridge was so thin and so high above the water that it was difficult for many to imagine that such a structure could be made of large stone blocks. The bridge is light in color, which changes during the day, depending on the sun.

It was built simply to connect the two banks, without any decorative intent or special importance. The main influence on the design of the bridge was the morphology of the place and its surroundings. The entire complex is not the result of a single design but of development over time, dependent on historical events and the need to protect the crossing over the river. The Old Bridge is not associated with any specific style or period in architecture, so it is unique in the world.
