Seguaci dell'ordine dei benedettini, gli olivetani fondarono il loro monastero nel 1313. Il beato Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) costituì una comunità religiosa con il nome di Congregazione di Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto, sull'omonimo monte a metà strada tra Siena e Arezzo. Nel 1319 la fondazione ricevette l'approvazione dal vescovo di Arezzo Guido Tarlati e venne inserita nella regola benedettina; l'anno successivo iniziò la costruzione del monastero e nel 1344 la Congregazione olivetana ricevette la conferma da papa Clemente VI. I suoi membri si dedicavano principalmente alle arti al servizio della liturgia.
Gli affreschi del chiostro grande furono realizzati fra il XV e XVI sec. da Luca Signorelli e dal Sodoma.

Followers of the Benedictine order, the Olivetans founded their monastery in 1313. Blessed Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) established a religious community with the name of Congregation of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto, on the homonymous mountain halfway between Siena and Arezzo. In 1319 the foundation received the approval of the bishop of Arezzo Guido Tarlati and was included in the Benedictine rule; the following year the construction of the monastery began and in 1344 the Olivetan Congregation received confirmation from Pope Clement VI. Its members devoted themselves mainly to the arts in the service of the liturgy.
The frescoes in the large cloister were made between the 15th and 16th centuries. by Luca Signorelli and Sodoma.
