            The Main Breakwater stops large swells sweeping through Port Taranaki. It has layers of akmons (multi-ton concrete blocks) lining the seaward side which dissipate the full force of incoming waves whilst protecting the structure.

We are looking at the Main Breakwater and Moturoa Wharf in this photograph. The port tugs Rupe and Tuakana are berthed in Moturoa 3 and the bulk carrier Sea Harmony, with a length of 170 m, is occupying berths Moturoa 2 and Moturoa 1. A bit harder to see is a couple of commercial fishing boats in the Main Breakwater 1 berth.
