Lock 44 Refurbished on the C&O Canal

            This canal lock has been restored to original conditions. The vertical steel lock keys (two each side) pass from the swing beams to the sluice gates below the water level to allow control of the level.  The design is based on Leonardo da Vinci's 1485 gate design. The lock was originally completed in 1834 using gray and white limestone for the walls.
