nyc - misc buildings 2017 39

            Interior of the Fulton Transit Center (Grimshaw Architects, with Arup and James Carpenter Design Associates, completed 2014 following many phases of design and budgetary adjustment going back to 2002). The existing subway station was and remains a mostly confusing warren of passageways and stairways, of the "climb down here, go forward no more than two more staircases, then climb back up" variety. I suspect everyone involved did the best they could to alleviate this, or at least make the passageways more pleasant, but it's an impossible mission since the complex connects four or five major subway lines (depending how you count), built by different and competing entities at different moments.  The entry pavilion, essentially a glorified food court, is certainly embellished by the suspended, light-bouncing cone beneath its skylight oculus, but I'm not sure any of this was strictly necessary under the framework of repair work after 9/11.
