2013 - datong - xuankong temple 8

            Xuankong Temple, a.k.a. the Hanging Monastery (491+, with current structures from Ming or Qing era). This is one of those things that's just obviously fantastic, without me having too much to add in the way of specifics.  I'm sure someone more knowledgeable about the site, or about Buddhist temple design in this region, could say much more. I'm just glad I went.

View looking up at the entry, showing 'attachment' edge between cliff and temple. The principal structural supports are long timber beams, inserted deep into holes carved into the cliffside.
