8861 South Geelong 17/03/2024 - a photo on Flickriver

            Running around 35 minutes late due to a train fault, V/Line passenger train 8861 from Southern Cross to Warrnambool slows for the station at South Geelong with N468 hauling a 5 carriage N set on Sunday the 17th of March 2024. 

V/Line’s locomotive hauled passenger services are currently in their dying days, with the N class hauled trains only running on a handful of lines on selected services to Bairnsdale, all trains to Warrnambool and Swan Hill as well as some weekday intercity peak services to Geelong. It's expected the longer distance runs will remain for some time to enable track upgrades and stabling facilities for VLocity railcars to be built during the first half of the year. 

During this weekend, 4 N classes have just been leased to local operator SSR for their broad gauge grain operations in the hopes that their locomotive and reliability issues will be improved, the remaining N's are either still active on V/Line's passenger workings or placed in storage at South Dynon or Geelong locomotive depots.
