Birds of a Feather 3I1241 - a photo on Flickriver

            
We all know the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together” but apparently, that’s not always the case. First of all, it depends upon the species of bird. Some birds never flock, leading mainly solitary lives. Others flock, but only at certain times of the year. So is the story of the American Oystercatcher. While on breeding territory these birds fiercely defend their chosen territories, but during the non-breeding season they flock together on wintering grounds. When two oystercatchers that have staked out a claim in Brant Beach are suddenly joined by a pair headed south, the greeting is less that friendly. Apparently, the home team hasn’t yet received the notice that the season is over and it’s time to hightail it out of here, before winter sets in. The sudden attack and loss of a feather or two are enough to make the transient pair head off to find another, friendlier spot to spend the evening. #AmericanOystercatchers
