Disney Hatter - a photo on Flickriver

Disney Hatter

I found this is a very tucked-away part of Disney World where I had never before visited. When you enter the Magic Kingdom and come out from under the train station and look down Main Street, to your right is the theater. This is where you can currently go to meet and have your picture taken with Disney Princesses and in a separate area, Mickey Mouse. We were there for the princesses that day. So, after we were finished with them (must commend my son here for being such a trooper while we waited), you do the classic exit through the gift shop. The store looks like a backstage area for the theater at first, but as you leave, it becomes a hat shop. It's not the Chapeau, but another one. There's a tiny sign for it outside, but I'm betting hardly anyone goes in it that didn't just come out of the meet and greet. Anyway, on the display table in the middle of the shop was a small collection of hat boxes with this crest on it. I love the typography, especially the word "Disney" and "New York." It's just a nice piece of period artwork.

While I was standing there, I was trying to recall if I'd ever heard anything along the lines of Walt Disney's family being in the hat business, but couldn't (not that I have anything approaching comprehensive knowledge of the man). I loved the design, so I took this photo and thought I'd see what the story was later, if there even was one.

My first thought was that this was just a cool set piece that an imagineer came up with that fit well in the store and was possibly tied into the overall story of the store, but was entirely fictional. But, after a thoroughly short Google search and at first only coming up with The Mad Hatter, I did find out that this was a real business. I came across this article which explains the link, or lack of one.

I'm betting this box is a reproduction, because you wouldn't want hundreds of people pawing around a box that could be over 100 years old, but It's still pretty cool, even if it is somewhat co-opted from the original source.
