Former Headquarters of the Union of South American Nations (USANUR), La Ciudad Mitad del Mundo

            The Union of South American Nations (USAN; Spanish: Unión de Naciones Suramericanas, UNASUR; Portuguese: União de Nações Sul-Americanas, UNASUL; is an intergovernmental regional organization that once comprised twelve South American countries; as of 2019, most have withdrawn.

On March 13, 2019, Ecuador announced that it will withdraw from the organization. The president of the country, Lenin Moreno, also asked the bloc to return the headquarters building of the organization, based in Quito.

Overshadowing the Mitad del Mundo monument is the headquarters for the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), called 'Nestor Kirchner' in honor of the former Argentine president and fronted by a statue of him. A startling modernist building, with gravity-defying cubist structures resembling a misshapen spaceship, it was designed by Diego Guayasamín and opened for business in December 2014.
