A peine assis sur une marche pour siroter notre Tchaé, nous sommes vivement interpellés. Il est 7h, le soleil se lève sur le Gange à Bénarès, les pèlerins déambulent, font leurs ablutions rituelles, ou du yoga, les enfants jouent dans l'eau... Face à nous, un homme ressemblant à un Sâdhu nous lance un sonore "Where do you come from ?" A la réponse "From France !", il part d'un rire franc et nous lance "Ah, France ! Bordeaux ! Very good wine !"
S'en suit une étonnante discussion avec cet homme, visiblement heureux et un brin goguenard, qui vit à moitié nu, sans toit, sur les bords du Gange. Plus étonnant encore est son parcours de vie, très déroutant pour nos repères occidentaux.
Ses parents se sont installés à Bénarès au moment de l'indépendance et de la partition. Ils ont lancé une activité d'aromathérapie ayurvédique, reprise par notre homme, puis par son fils. Leur activité se concentre essentiellement sur l'extraction d'huiles essentielles, et leur commercialisation notamment à des fins thérapeutiques.
Après une longue discussion, notre interlocuteur nous invite à découvrir la maison de ses enfants, son ancienne maison donc, et leur activité. Ce qui nous donne l'occasion de rencontrer le fils, qui poursuit cette prospère activité. Et croyez-moi, on est loin du bricolage : en plus de la transmission de génération en génération, le fils a fait un Master en soins Âyurvédiques à l'université de Bénarès, et maîtrise pas moins de 300 essences, en plus de la vente de bois de santal (nettement meilleur pour la santé que l'encens, un cauchemar en terme de pollution), d'épices (notamment de masala), et de thés. Le tout produit exclusivement en Inde, et transformé dans leur atelier situé à l’autre bout de l'Uttar Pradesh qui emploi un certain nombre de personnes.
Toute la famille est hindoue et très pratiquante. On ne mange ni viande, ni ail, ni oignons (ils ont la réputation d'échauffer les nerfs et d'éveiller l’appétit sexuel). Ils ont quatre vaches à la maison, qui vivent au rez-de-chaussée. Elles sont bien nourries, traitées, comme il se doit, comme des déesses, avec pour chacune un ventilateur au-dessus d'elle... Ils se servent du lait pour l'alimentation (et peut-être des urines pour des remèdes ayurvédiques).
Le fils nous fait remarquer, au cours de la conversation, qu'il ne faut pas dire "Shoukria" pour dire merci, mais "Dhanyavaad". "Shoukria, ça vient de Choukrane. C'est pour les musulmans. Et nous, nous ne sommes certainement pas musulmans, nous sommes hindous !" nous fait-il remarquer, avec une pointe de fierté et en insistant bien. Nous sentons bien que le sujet est sensible, et que cette famille n'est peut-être pas une cheville ouvrière de l'ouverture entre communautés à Bénarès.
Revenons-en à notre ascète. Au sein de sa famille, il a franchi progressivement les deux premières étapes de la vie d'un hindou pieux : l'éducation à la religion, aux rites et aux textes sacrés (Brahmacharya); puis la fondation d'une famille (Grihastha). Son fils ayant eu lui-même une descendance, il a pu quitter la maison familiale pour rentrer dans sa troisième étape de vie : la Vānaprastha, une vie de retraite et d'ascèse, loin des possessions matérielles et de la famille.
Il vit désormais dans un grand dénuement, uniquement de la mendicité. Il ne mange que des fruits, et passe ses journées à prier, méditer, faire du yoga ou laisser la vie s'écouler paisiblement sur les bords du Gange, avec un brin de causette de temps à autre à ceux qui passent par là. Toujours le sourire aux lèvres, et le rire prêt à s’exprimer franchement. On le sent profondément heureux et d’un détachement des choses matérielles qui laisse sacrément songeur.
Il voit sa famille de temps en temps, mais ne dort plus que dehors, sur les rives du fleuve sacré et les marches des escaliers qui y mènent. Son devoir de fonder une famille étant accompli, il ne lui reste plus qu'à prier et se rapprocher de Dieu pour préparer lentement la fin de sa vie, dans l'ascèse et le dénuement, jusqu'à l’étape ultime en devenant réellement Sâdhu : il s’agit alors de rentrer dans la 4ème et dernière étape de sa vie, incluant vœu de silence et détachement total de la société et de toute possession matérielle. Le Sâdhu renonce jusqu’à son nom.
Quoi qu'il en soit, en pratiquant une telle ascèse, et en finissant sa vie au bord du Gange, il a de bonnes chances de s'y éteindre un jour, paisiblement. Et, au terme de sa crémation rituelle sur un des ghâts dédié à cela, il pourra ainsi se libérer des cycles de vie et de réincarnation, arriver à l'absence complète de toute forme de vie ultérieure et se fondre dans le cosmos pour l'éternité.
C'est, en tous les cas, tout ce qu'on peut lui souhaiter.
