LOFAR as cosmic ray detector

            LOFAR will have some highly unusual capabilities for a radio telescope, including the ability to detect high energy cosmic rays, which generate a brief but extremely powerful magnetic pulse as they enter the atmosphere. The little box with the flag in the foreground is a particle detector, there to provide confirmation of any cosmic ray events the main LOFAR stations (such as the HBA array in the background) pick up.
