Monument Lane engine shed closure article - Feb 1962

An article in the Birmingham Mail dated 24 Feb 1962 about the closure of the Monument Lane engine/locomotive shed to steam locos. The shed was closed to steam by British Railways in Feb 1962 then used as a service centre for diesel locos until 1967, it was demolished in 1986.

No. 47494 was a H. Fowler designed 'class 3F' 0-6-0T engine, built at the Vulcan Foundry, and new to the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in Feb 1928 carrying number 16577, renumbered to 7494 in 1934. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, BR renumbering the locomotive to 47494 in Sep 1948. It was withdrawn from service in Oct 1966, then scrapped in Feb 1967 at Cohens (Kettering).
