Immature Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) Klite River, Toba Inlet, BC

            This immature heron was very entertaining for us while we were waiting for a bear to appear. With the perfect green leafy backdrop giving it a great bokeh, we had fun watching its antics while it was watching us!

Baby great blue herons stay with their parents for about eight weeks. During this period, the young primarily remain in and around the nest, relying on their parents to bring food. After fledging, the chicks stay near the nest for another 2-3 weeks continuing to be fed by the adults. Heron nestlings have typically gained 86% of their adult weight 45 days after hatching. Once reaching adult stage, herons will only weigh between 2kg - 2.5kg (4.5 - 5.5 lbs) thanks in part to their hollow bones, a feature all birds share. The young heron can first fly at about 60 days of age.
