Horseshoe Quarry - Infra Red - a photo on Flickriver

Ok let's take a break from Tideswell Wakes week (but we might come back to it as it's not over yet !}
Anyway I have been out and about with the infra red camera to some different locations locally. Some of them hidden and not so well known. This for instance is Horseshoe Quarry or Furness Quarry to some , a privately owned quarry up till 2005 it was the first of the Middleton Dale roadstone quarries to close and reopen for alternative use.
In an interesting gambit it was bought by the British Mountaineering Council ( BMC) and is now one of the most visited Rock Climbing locations in the Peak District - see here for it's story

There weren't many climbers around the evening I last visited a couple of weeks ago but if you look closely on the right you will see one chap half way up the lower wall and that will give you a sense of scale. This place is marvellous, not only for climbing but ecologically and geologically it's fascinating especially now it's had a few years to revert and the original harshness has disappeared. Those into geocaching could do a lot worse than start here too !

This is some of the deepest limestone in the Peak District and if you like orchids well this summers's been great so far and it's not over yet with more species to come as the summer progresses.
The BMC have done a great job managing the site. Let's hope Middleton Dale is on the up ( it could do with some good news) and when the southern side - particularly the absolutely enormous Darlton quarry is finally re- landscaped and the new £3.5M Peak Park Visitor centre ( recently approved www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-25390900) gets built in Stoney it will be to the same standard and have some significant impact on the local economy and Middleton Dale will once again be truly on the map as it was in Victorian times.. Watch this space.!
