Pisa (Toscana) – La torre pendente

            La torre pendente di Pisa  costituisce il campanile della cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta collocata nella piazza del Duomo. 
E’ uno dei monumenti più celebri al mondo per la bellezza della struttura architettonica e la singolare inclinazione che ne fa un vero miracolo di equilibrio statico.
E’ alta circa 56 metri ed è caratterizzata dai giri di arcate cieche a sei piani di loggette. La pendenza è stata causata dal cedimento del terreno delle fondamenta verificatosi già nelle prime fasi della costruzione. L'inclinazione dell'edificio attualmente misura 4 gradi verso sud rispetto all'asse verticale con uno sprofondamento medio della base di circa due metri. 
I lavori iniziarono il 9 agosto 1173 ma furono interrotti a metà del terzo piano. La cedevolezza del terreno, costituito da argilla, è l’origine della pendenza della torre e, sebbene in misura minore, di tutti gli edifici nella piazza.
I lavori ripresero nel 1275 sotto la guida di Giovanni di Simone e Giovanni Pisano, aggiungendo alla costruzione precedente altri tre piani che, nel tentativo di raddrizzare la torre, sono stati progettati incurvati in senso opposto alla pendenza.
Il campanile fu completato alla metà del secolo successivo con l’aggiunta della cella campanaria.

The leaning tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta located in the square of the Duomo.
It is one of the most famous monuments in the world for the beauty of the architecture and the unique angle of slope that makes it a true miracle of static equilibrium.
It 's about 56 meters high and it is characterized by rounds of blind arches on six-story loggias. The slope was caused by land subsidence of the foundations just occurred in the early stages of construction. The slope of the building is currently measuring 4 degrees on the vertical axis on the south direction with an average subsidence on the base of two meters.
The construction began in August 9, 1173 but it was interrupted in the middle of the third floor. The softness of the ground, consisting of clay, is the origin of the slope of the tower and, to a lesser extent, of all the buildings in the square.
The work resumed in 1275 under the guidance of Giovanni of Simone and Giovanni Pisano, adding three more floors to the original building that, in an attempt to straighten the tower, was designed curved in the opposite direction to the slope.
The bell tower was completed in the middle of the next century with the addition of the belfry.
