A Salford school outing - a photo on Flickriver

We love this photo - so ordinary, but so interesting. We're somewhere in Salford, and it looks like there's a school party - or perhaps a Sunday School? - about to board a Salford Corporation bus for a day trip. The conductor is in full uniform, and the destination board reads 'special' - and no doubt these children were in for a special day.

These school outings were popular at a time when almost no one had a car, and many children hardy ever saw fields, forests and animals such as cattle and sheep. So these trips, even ten miles out of town, opened a window on a whole new world for por children from the slums.

The bus they're about to ride is a rarity, an 'Associated Daimler' built at a time when AEC and Daimler were working very closely together. It was new in 1928 and we suspect the photo was taken when the bus was quite new.

Salford buses at this time were painted red and off-white, but after World War 2 a new green livery was chosen. There is still one prewar Salford bus in existence carrying teh red livery - number 235 of 1939, preserved and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.
