Coming down the hill - a photo on Flickriver

            Back in the day on the Modoc Line, one of the nicer places to shoot pictures was Howard's Gulch. Located between Ambrose and Canby, California, it was a six mile long stretch of 2.2% grade that enabled eastward Modoc trains to drop into the Warm Springs Valley. The trackage through the gulch offered a lot of potential, if you didn't mind a hike up a hill. The elevation in the area varies between 4,500 and 4,900 feet. Any hiking quickly reminded you of every extra donut you had ever packed away. 

In August 2008, I was in Klamath Falls for a class reunion and vacation. The Modoc Northern Railroad's empire was at its height. In addition to operating the northern remnant of the old Modoc Line, it had also taken over operation of the former Lakeview Branch, which had been owned by Lake County, Oregon since 1986. 

On a very hot afternoon, I chased MNRR out of Tulelake. The railroad had a fairly long train of centerbeams and covered hoppers. Knowing the train was long enough to fill this s-curve, I left it near Perez and hiked this hill near Ambrose.  Unfortunately for me, after I left the train behind, all of the covered hoppers were set out. Although I was sorry to see the shorter train, I was able to get the full train and caboose in the image.

The following May, MNRR packed it in.
